Senior Professor, Department of Microbiology Professor Jyoti Prakash Tamang has been selected as Fellow of the prestigious Indian National Science Academy (INSA-FNA) for the year 2022. This is one of highest honors for a scientist in the country, and certainly a proud moment for the University. This fellowship is awarded to him for his 36 long years’ contributions on the evidence-based scientific validation of beneficial microbiome and health-promoting benefits of the ethnic fermented foods of the Himalayas including North Eastern region. The India National Science Academy is one of the most prestigious and biggest Scientific Academies in India established in 1935. 

Being selected as a Fellow of the Indian National Science Academy is a prestigious honour and recognition for a scientist. The University has two Fellows of the INSA- apart from Vice- Chancellor Prof. Avinash Khare, Prof. Jyoti Prakash Tamang has been recently selected as the Fellow of the Academy.

Professor Dr. Jyoti Prakash Tamang is the Senior Professor in Department of Microbiology, Sikkim Central University, and is the pioneer researcher in ethnic fermented foods and beverages of the Himalayan regions of India, Nepal and Bhutan, and also of South East Asia for last 36 years focusing on evidence-based science for validation of traditional food fermentation focusing on metagenomics, metabolomics, bioinformatics, probiotics and health benefits. Currently he is holding the prestigious International Centre for Integrated Mountain Development (ICIMOD) Mountain Chair. He has received several national and international awards including Department of Biotechnology-Bio-Science Award in 2005. He has published more than 184 research publications including 8 books, 28 Book-chapters with more than 7300 citations and h-index of 49 in SCOPUS; and produced 16 PhD students and 5 Post-doctorate scholars. He is member of Scientific Panel of FSSAI (Food Safety and Standards Authority of India), executive member of Asian Federation of Societies of Lactic Acid Bacteria, and Indian Representative in International Commission on Yeasts. Recently Prof. Tamang was nominated as Global Kimchi Ambassador by World Institute of Kimchi of Government of South Korea. Recently he was also included in top 2% scientists of the world by Stanford University of USA. He held several administrative positions in Sikkim University as the first Registrar, Dean of School of Life Sciences and officiating Vice-Chancellor.

Objectives of Sikkim University

  1. To disseminate and advance knowledge by providing instructional and research facilities in such branches of learning as it may deem fit.
  2. To make provisions for integrated courses in humanities, natural and physical sciences, social sciences, forestry and other allied disciplines in the educational programmes of the University.
  3. To take appropriate measures for promoting innovations in teaching-learning process, inter-disciplinary studies and research.
  4. To educate and train manpower for the development of the State of Sikkim.
  5. To pay special attention to the improvement of the social and economic conditions and welfare of the people of that State, their intellectual, academic and cultural development.
