SWAYAM (Study Webs of Active–Learning for Young Aspiring Minds)

SWAYAM is an initiative of the Government of India designed to realize the three core principles of Education Policy access, equity, and quality. The objective of this effort is to take the best teaching learning resources to all, including the most disadvantaged. The components of SWAYAM courses are Video lectures, Downloadable reading materials, Self-assessment quizzes and assignments and Online discussion forums. The National Coordinators are AICTS, NPTEL, UGC, CEC, NCERT, NIOS and IGNOU. The link to the website is Swayam Central.

Swayam Examination and Certification

All courses offered through SWAYAM are available free of cost for learners. However, students who wish to obtain an official SWAYAM Certificate are required to register for the proctored final examination by paying the prescribed examination fee. These examinations are conducted by the NTA at designated examination centers on scheduled dates.

To encourage greater student participation in SWAYAM courses, facilitate credit transfer, and provide opportunities for students to improve their performance, the 24th SWAYAM Board, in its meeting held on 5 March 2024, approved an important policy decision. Accordingly, universities that have adopted the UGC (Credit Framework for Online Learning Courses through SWAYAM) Regulations, 2021, are permitted to conduct examinations for SWAYAM courses completed by their own students. This provision enables universities to award credits for eligible SWAYAM courses and provides students with an additional opportunity to successfully complete and earn credits through the SWAYAM platform.

SWAYAM at Sikkim University

Sikkim University adopted the Regulations for the Implementation of MOOCs through SWAYAM as approved by the Executive Council in its 44th Meeting held on 27 December 2023 (Resolution No. EC 44.5.1). The SWAYAM Committee of Sikkim University consist of seven members including one student representative. Additionally, each department has a designated SWAYAM mentor.
