National Science Day Celebrated at Sikkim University
Sikkim University celebrated National Science Day on 28th February 2025 at Cauvery Hall, of the University. The theme for 2025 was “Empowering Indian Youth for Global Leadership in Science and Innovation for Viksit Bharat.” It aimed to inspire young people. It also celebrated India's science achievements and important contributions. National Science Day marks the day Dr. C.V. Raman discovered the Raman Effect in 1928. India has celebrated National Science Day every year since 1986. This was when the government decided to honor the Raman Effect discovery.
Professor Dr. Jyoti Prakash Tamang, the Vice-Chancellor (Officiating), was the chief guest and spoke about Dr. C.V. Raman's life and work. He emphasized how important science is in our lives. He also highlighted modern application of Raman effects in medical science, agriculture, material sciences, pharmaceuticals, foods, etc. Prof. Tamang stated that science is part of our daily routine. He thinks everyone should grasp basic science. This helps us understand how humans live. He also mentioned that all subjects are linked. Each one helps the others. This leads to new knowledge. He urged students to explore new ideas. He wants them to do research using the NEP. This encourages learning across different subjects. 
Students from Departments of Botany, Horticulture, Physics, Chemistry, and Geography displayed science models. Models covered topics like waste management and bioplastics. Other topics included green energy, sustainable development, alternative energy, and climate change. The Vice-Chancellor of Sikkim University opened the exhibition. An elocution contest also took place for National Science Day.
Two teams shared the first prize for model making. One team was from the Botany Department. They presented a model on sustainable development. The other was from the Physics Department. They presented a model on physics in daily life. Amit Acharya and Samrith Ruchal led these teams. Joneswar Basumatary from Chemistry and Jyotishman Roy from Horticulture shared the second prize. Joneswar presented a model on green technology. Jyotishman presented a model on waste management. Ranjana Adhikary led a team from Geography that won third prize. Their model focused on sustainable development.
In the elocution contest, Sonu Karki from the English Department won first prize. Aryan Acharya from the Physics Department won second prize. Kabita Kharka from Library and Information Science won third prize.
The programme was attended by the Registrar, Librarian, Deans of Schools, Heads, Faculty embers and students from various Departments and SUSA representatives. Vice-Chancellor thanked the Organising Committee of the National Science Day led by Prof. Sohel Firdos with other members Prof. Swarup Roy, Dr. Manju Rana Dr. Anand Pariyar, and Dr. Rupak Mukherjee, and SUSA Rinchenla Sherpa for successful conduction of National Science Day.
