Sikkim University organized an Induction Program for newly admitted first-semester students in the Four-Year Undergraduate Program (FYUG) for the Departments of Chinese, Hindi, Music, and Psychology on October 4, 2024 in the Raap Jyor Cauvery Conference Hall, located at 5th Mile, Tadong, Gangtok. The primary aim of the program was to familiarize new students with the distinct attributes of Sikkim University as a centre of academic excellence, along with its history, vision, mission, and values. This initiative was envisioned and conceptualized by Professor Dr. Jyoti Prakash Tamang, Vice-Chancellor (officiating), who attended as the chief patron and mentor. The gathering also featured Registrar Professor Laxuman Sharma, Joint Registrar (Academics) Dr. Suresh K. Gurung, Controller of Examinations Dr. S. Murali Mohan, Deputy Registrar (Establishment) Mrs. Grace D. Chankapa, Dean of Students’ Welfare Professor Sanjay Dahal, Dean of the School of Languages and Literature Professor Dr. Rosy Chamling, Dean of the School of Human Sciences and Director of the FYUG Program Professor Satyanand Panda, along with department heads, faculty members, administrative staff, and students. The program commenced with the Sikkim University Invocation Song, followed by a welcome extended to the Vice-Chancellor and other officials by Professor Panda. The new undergraduate students then introduced themselves.
In his speech, the Vice-Chancellor stressed that encouraging open interaction would foster a better understanding and strong relationships among the new students and the University community, helping students feel a sense of belonging to their institution. He provided a brief history of Sikkim University since its establishment in 2007 and reiterated its motto, vision, and mission. He acknowledged the achievements of the four departments: Chinese, Hindi, Music, and Psychology, while recognizing the efforts of faculty and staff toward their development. He encouraged the students to learn the local language and culture, get benefits of the nature and scenic beauty of Sikkim, engage with peers and educators from various regions, respect their parents and elders, and be determined in their academic journeys.
The Dean of Students’ Welfare highlighted that student welfare is a top priority for Sikkim University and encouraged all students to uphold the institution's integrity. The Controller of Examinations outlined the examination rules and regulations, focusing on the key aspects of the New Education Policy of 2020. The Registrar provided detailed information on essential facilities available to students, including free transportation via university buses, advanced library resources, subsidized canteen services, hostel accommodations, free medical services at the university health centre, NSS volunteer training, and sports and gym facilities. Dr. Dhriti Roy, Head of the Department of Chinese, concluded the event with a formal vote of thanks.
