  • The core focus of the Department is to provide post-graduate and research programmes in International Relations and Area Studies. The Department aims at providing a sound understanding of various issues through an interdisciplinary approach. This Department introduces students to the major theoretical perspectives on the subject. It also emphasizes on inter-state relations, relations of States and Non-State actors, dynamics of globalization and the changing economic, political, cultural and social interconnections.
  • Considering the geo-strategic importance of the region, the Department has the advantage of addressing issues directly related to the region and the immediate neighbouring countries viz China, Nepal, Bhutan, Bangladesh and other Southeast Asian countries. The Department strives towards enabling students to engage with issues like environment, border, migration and refugees, trade, water, gender and human rights which are specific to the region. Towards this objective, the Department aims at involving students at the ground level through exchange programmes and field research, thereby exposing them to a broad understanding of theoretical concepts through application of relevant case studies and exchange of ideas.
  • Major events organized by the Department recently include national seminars on Federalism and Border States, Tibet: Trade with India’s Borders; Two Workshop/Training Programme on Research Methodology; Capacity Building for young faculty in Social Sciences. Majority of the students completed Masters from the Department are pursuing their MPhil and PhD in the Department and various other institutions all over the country. 10 Students have cleared UGC-JRF and 8 students cleared UGC-NET from the department. Research students made 5 paper presentations abroad and more than a dozen presentations in the country. One student in the Department has been selected for the prestigious Kodikara Award.
