About the Department

Department of Horticulture was established in 2009 as one of the foremost professional course departments of Sikkim University, offering integrated B.Sc-M.Sc in Horticulture of 6 years’ duration. In the year 2013, the department started direct M.Sc (Horticulture) and PhD (Horticulture) with four specializations viz. Fruit Science, Vegetable Science, Floriculture and Plantation, Spices, Medicinal and Aromatic crops. In addition, the department also offers PG Diploma in Tea Plantation Development and Management.

Highlights

The syllabus offered in the department is in conformity with guidelines of Indian Council of Agriculture Research (ICAR) so as to enable the students to compete in all India examinations like JRF, SRF, NET and Agriculture Research Scientist (ARS) examinations conducted by Agriculture Scientist Recruitment Board (ASRB) as well as making them suitable for other national organizations like BARC, DRDO, NABARD, nationalized banks as well as horticulture companies apart from making them self employed professionals.

The department has highly sophisticated laboratory and apart from teaching it has offered trainings to various organizations including state govt. departments.

The department organized a National Conference on Tea Culture and Science: Special reference to present scenario of Indian tea on 9th April, 2013 in Sikkim University.

Preventing extinction and improving conservation status of threatened plants through application of Biotechnological tools, funded by DBT, Ministry of Science & Technology, Govt. of India.

Molecular characterization of the viruses associated with chirke and foorkey disease of Large Cardamom in North East India funded by DST-SERB, Govt. of India.

Potential bio control of invasive species Hedychium gardnerianum, H. flavescens, H. coronarium in Sikkim India, funded by Commonwealth Agriculture Bureau International, United Kingdom.

 

Innovation & Good Practices

  • To give firsthand experience of cultivation lectures by Progressive Farmers are regularly organized
  • Regular Field Visits are organized to give exposure to different agro climatic zones
  • Final year UG students are attached with farm, industry, institution of horticultural importance to impart professionalism
  • To have better student-teacher relationship ward counseling is given in personal and professional aspects
  • Students receive hands-on training in field experiments at the Sikkim University Botanical Garden.
