Welcome to Sikkim

Sikkim borders on Nepal in the west, Tibet on the north and north east, and Bhutan on the south-east. The only internal boundary is with the state of West Bengal on the south.

The terrain throughout Sikkim is hilly and the elevation ranges from 280 metres (920 ft) to 8,585 metres (28,000 ft). The climate ranges from subtropical to high alpine. Sikkim experiences variable temperature with summer in the foothills and freezing winter on the high mountains. The climate of the state has been divided roughly into tropical, temperate and alpine zones. For most of the year, the climate is cold and humid. The state experiences a heavy rainfall due to its proximity to the Bay of Bengal. It receives an average annual rainfall of 500 cm. The maximum temperature is recorded usually during the month of July and August and minimum during December and January.

Kanchenjanga, the world's third highest peak, is located in the north-western part of the state and is revered as the presiding deity of Sikkim. It is visible from many parts of the state.
