  Justice (Mrs.) Ruma Pal

  Hon’ble Chancellor of Sikkim University (2012-17)




Justice (Mrs.) Ruma Pal did her LLB from Nagpur University where she was awarded the Motilal Nehru Gold Medal for getting a first class first. She then went to Oxford University for BCL and was the President of the Ralegh Club at Oxford, besides being the Editor of prestigious journal called The African Law Reports at Oxford.

As Jurist

On return, she started legal practice in 1968 iin Civil, Revenue, Labour Laws and Constitutional matters at the High Court of Calcutta. She was elevated to the post of Judge of the High Court of Calcutta on August 6, 1990 and became a Judge of the Supreme Court of India on January 28, 2000. She superannuated in June 2006.

Academic Interest

Justice Pal has co-revised M. P. Jain’s Indian Constitutional Law (6th Edition), which has been highly acclaimed in the legal academia. She also presented several papers at national and international seminars, which were subsequently published in national and international legal journals. Since 2006, Justice Pal delivered the following distinguished lectures:

o  The Rosalind Wilson Memorial Lecture (Delhi)

o  K.T. Desai Memorial Lecture (Bombay)

o  Distinguished Lecture Series at the Centre for the Advanced Study of India, University of Pennsylvania (USA)

o  The 6th Kuttan Memorial Lecture  (London)

o  The Durga Das Basu Centenary Memorial Lecture  (Kolkata)

o  The G.L. Sanghi Memorial Lecture, Lawasia, (Seoul)

o  V.M. Tarkunde Memorial lecture (Delhi)


Justice Pal has received many awards, some of which are as follows:

-       The 2006 Dayawati Modi Stree Shakti Samman

-       The 2009 Award by West Bengal Commission for Women

-       The Star Ananda “Sera Bangali 2010” award for excellence in the field of public duty

-       Doctoris Honoris Causa in the field of law: Utkal University (1911)
